Three Top All-Inclusives for Over-50 Travelers

Travelers over the age of 50 can’t be easily pigeonholed: Not only do they differ in age from one another but they also differ in interests, energy levels and lifestyles. And like a badge of honor, they pride themselves on deciding where, when and how they want to travel.

Boomers have helped redefine the landscape of travel. Some seek opportunities for activity and adventure; others favor relaxation and solace. Some want to travel solo; others prefer traveling as a couple or with family or friends. The growing portfolio of all-inclusive resorts offers diverse options to satisfy all of these travelers.

By midlife, travelers are generally experienced enough that they share some universal needs: They demand flexible but sophisticated dining options, comfortable accommodations with amenities, and friendly, professional service. But above all, they seek value.

Based on feedback from visitors, Tom Carr, President of All Inclusive Outlet, has selected three all-inclusive resorts that not only fit the criteria above but that are especially welcoming to travelers over the age of 50 as well as seniors. These all inclusive vacation resorts include:

1. Couples Tower Isle

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

 Couples Tower Isle View

The décor at the family-owned Couples Tower Isle is light, breezy and contemporary. Steeped in tradition, this resort (formerly Couples Ocho Rios) from the 1950s was totally renovated in 2008. Loyalists who have been returning to this same resort for decades say it looks better than ever. A meal at the fine dining restaurant Eight Rivers, one of six restaurants on the property, evokes the romance of old Jamaica.

With only 218 rooms and suites spread over 19 acres, a stay at the resort feels relaxing and serene but is rich with opportunities to meet other couples and make new friends. The property is intimate yet large enough to offer a piano bar, cocktail parties on the roof terrace, and other evening entertainment. It’s not a place with loud music, late night parties, or disputes over lounge chairs.

Guests who crave more activity have the option of snorkeling, taking a catamaran cruise, or arranging an off-site hiking excursion at nearby Dunn’s River Falls (also included in the price of the room). Those who want to keep in shape or indulge in therapies or treatments can spend time at the resort’s Oasis Spa, named top Caribbean hotel spa in 2013 by Travel + Leisure.

2. Rendezvous

 St. Lucia, West Indies

Rendezvous For Over 50

More than 60 percent of the guests at Rendezvous, another couplesonly resort, are over the age of 40 and almost one-third are over the age of 55. This should help assuage any fears that an over-50 traveler will feel like a fish out of the aquamarine waters. This boutique couples-only property has just 100 rooms, all with private balconies, sited on a two-mile stretch of white sandy beach surrounded by lush tropical gardens.

If someone wants privacy—to be alone with his/her partner or spouse, there are enough places to escape on the spacious grounds—whether for a romantic candlelight dinner, walks on the beautiful beach, or pampering at The Spa in the Water Garden.

Couples often come to Rendezvous to simply recharge their relationship, and to get away from the stresses of work and/or family obligations. The setting encourages guests to enjoy the beauty of the environment without the distraction of email or cell phones. Relaxation can take different forms for different people; the variety of activities offered here include yoga, Pilates, tennis, volleyball, archery, water skiing, windsurfing and sailing.

3. Grand Velas

Riviera Maya, Mexico

Grand Velas Adults Section

On a sprawling 205-acre beachfront property, Grand Velas has three distinct types of accommodations called “ambiances.” The adult-only Grand Class Suites is perfect for over-50 travelers who want the solitude and privacy of a luxury boutique hotel, complete with 24-hour concierge service and spacious rooms with expansive patios or terraces with plunge pools. Children under the age of 12 aren’t permitted in this 90-unit enclave but as a practical matter, there are few children of any age here.

Instead, families with children generally opt for the Ambassador Class ambiance that offers a kids’ club, teen club, more pools, and other activities geared to young people. Set in a lush jungle setting on the same grounds, the Zen Grand Class ambiance is also family-oriented,

For the over-50 traveler, a stay at Grand Velas offers three contiguous but different settings at different price points. This array allows for a romantic couples getaway, or a multigenerational trip or reunion with other family members. Six bars and five gourmet restaurants, with both indoor and al fresco seating, provide places for generations to gather together over meals and accommodations that allow them to live apart. The impressive 90,000squarefoot spa was named best spa in the world by Virtuoso.
